Bull Elephants are chased out of the herd when reaching sexual maturity, and will go out on their own until such time as they can join another herd to breed. They will often be found feeding on their own, like this one, in an open clearing.

DSCN2624.JPG

Cheetah numbers are on a steady decline, and a sighting of this rare cat really stirs the soul. This mother and her 3 cubs moved onto a                                  termite mound as a vantage point                                          to look out for both threats and                                                          prey. ZEBRA CROSSING

BUSHVELD ICON

IMG_0884.jpg

Zebras are such unique animals, and their

sometimes goofy nature makes them top many

safari-goers wishlists. On taking this image.

the joke made was that "This is how Zebra

Crossings are made".

The Bateleur, whose name is derived from a French word for a street juggler, has a unique flying style, rocking gently on the thermals. Their colours are truly iconic in the African bush, and are truly one of Africa's most beautiful raptors

RAINBOW HUNTER

TUSKS AT DUSK

Malachite.jpg

The flashes of colour in a Malachite Kingfishers plumage make them one of my personal favourite photographic subjects. Their small size and  delicate nature detracts from the fact that they are

in fact highly efficient hunters. They patrol the reed-beds, suddenly diving into the water to grab prey. A truly amazing little bird

Baby Ele.jpg

In the height of the dry season, in South Africa's Timbavati Game Reserve, elephant herds move through the Mopani thickets on their way to drink, before the darkness of night settles in. The dust that is kicked up creates an almost halo effect on these beautiful creatures. In this image, a young calf tries to catch up with its mother, after having been a little over-interested in a stick.

BRIGHT CAMOUFLAGE

PEEK-A-BOO

IMG_0011-Edit.jpg

The African Green Pigeon is a bright and welcome visitor to many parts of the Northern and Eastern parts of Southern Africa, with large flocks also found in Central Africa. They are fruit eaters, and are often found in Fig trees, gorging themselves on the figs in spring. Their melodious call has always been a sound of home to me.

DSCN4595.JPG

Lions, whilst seen by             many as  ferocious killers, are surprisingly shy if they                                             have not been habituated to                                                vehicles, and this recently released                                          lioness was a case in point. She                                           seemed to play a game of peek-a-boo                                      with us as she investigated us.

FLYING RAINBOW

Roller.jpg

The Lilac-breasted Roller is one of the favourite birds of Safari-goers, and hence is one of Africa's most photographed birds. Getting it's name from its characteristic aerial courtship display, this flying rainbow brightens up any environment it is found in.

ON A STROLL

_MG_0047.jpg

Another popular bird to see on safari, Ground Hornbill populations have decreased drastically due to severe habitat loss. They nest in large holes in dead trees, and                         therefore, through the placement                  of nesting                              boxes in large trees,                                                              conservation efforts and                         researchers are             repopulating them areas  where they                                                      had previously                                                                                          disappeared

SPOTS IN MOTION

IMG_1376.JPG

Leopards are truly incredible creatures, living solitary lives and fending for themselves. THey are not at the top of the predator food chain, and often have kills stolen by hyenas and lions. They avoid this by trying to hoist their kills into trees wherever possible. They are stealthy hunters that rely on ambush to hunt.

RESTING IN SHADE

_MG_2547.jpg

African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves as they are sometimes known, are spectacularly coloured, but extremely rare, due to habitat loss. These animals have been on the IUCN Endangered List for years, but successful conservation efforts are slowly bringing them back to areas where they had nearly disappeared.

ON ALERT

GOLDEN STRIPES

_MG_0234.jpg

Helmeted Guinefowl are some of           the most unique birds in the African bush, and are a firm-              favourite with safari-goers. They are always worth watching               as they are also very reliable alarm birds, warning all               around them of approaching predators, both from          the sky and the ground.

_MG_2479.jpg

Burchell's Zebra are the most common and widespread species of Zebra found in South Africa. Whilst their markings would seem to make them stand out, they break up the outline of the animal to predators, who mostly cannot see in colour.

SEARCHING FOR THERMALS

CAMOUFLAGED KILLER

_MG_1380.jpg

Vultures are relatively large and heavy birds, and because of this, need to expend as little energy as possible whilst flying long distances in search of food. To do this, they will normally wait for the ground to heat up, creating thermals, for them to glide on, making the search for food almost                effortless.

_MG_1424.jpg

The Rosetted patterns on a leopard's fur truly create a beautiful yet deadly camouflage. These rosettes break up the outline of the cat whilst hunting, often making them undetectable by sight to many of their prey species. Leopards are largely solitary hunters, and are generally found in more than one animal, only when mating or with cubs. Having said that, cubs will generally only stay with their mother for about 2 years, after which they too begin their solitary journeys. I have massive respect for these amazing cats as they take on the world largely on their own.

PERCHED AND READY

PRETTY POLLINATOR

_MG_0316.jpg

The African Fish Eagle is a true African icon. Its hunting behaviour, swooping down to grab its prey from the water, its iconic call, an almost anthem of Africa, and its beautiful plumage make it a firm favourite amongst safari-goers. This adult uses this dead Leadwood tree as vantage point from which to spot prey.

IMG_0135.jpg

Butterflies form an essential part in the pollination of many plant and tree species. These small but wonderful creatures and their                      intricate differences give almost behind-the-scenes                                                                         assistance in the survival of so

                                                          many ecosystems
